Introducing STEM to your students
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - the subjects that support a prosperous economy and a safe, healthy society.
STEM education is defined as 'an interdisciplinary approach to learning that removes the traditional barriers of [these] four disciplines ... and integrates them into the real world with rigorous and relevant experiences for students'. (Vásquez, Sneider, Comer , 2013)
This is the goal we strive towards at JC Ingenium. From preschool through grade 12, the vast majority of institutions focus on teaching Science and Math, paying very little attention to Technology (which encompasses the products and systems they will need to interact with in future) and even less to Engineering (which comprises the design and innovation process of each system). Additionally, often these subjects are taught in isolation, rather than in a way that illustrates their co-dependency.
Today's students need to develop skills that allow them to thrive in an increasingly technologically-dependent society and be able to function competitively as professionals upon entering the workforce. Through technological innovation, we will progressively see significant impacts on traditional professions, with some eventually disappearing before our eyes. However, as we see new teachers and students emerge - armed with the skills and competencies required to support the needs of contemporary early and primary education - we can be assured that these disciplines will be met with fresh eyes and minds.
